The ranking process also considers other climate-focused initiatives, such as reducing absolute emissions and collaborating with external assessors. These combined efforts result in an overall score for each company. Metsä Board was awarded a total score of 75.4 and ranked among the top 100 companies out of 600 on the list in Europe.
“This recognition is great evidence of our continued commitment to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions,” adds Esa Kaikkonen, CEO of Metsä Board. “We’ve made significant investments in our operations, and we will continue to invest and work to reduce our emissions as well as the carbon footprint of our products.”
Metsä Board has achieved significant reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity over the past few years, driven by investments in fossil-free energy and the implementation of efficient production processes. In addition, the company published its climate transition plan last year, which outlines clear pathways and measures to achieve a target of zero fossil-based carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 for its operations (Scope 1 and 2).
“By publishing our climate transition plan, we wanted to be transparent about our efforts and share our ambition on climate matters,” says Anne Uusitalo, Product Safety and Sustainability Director at Metsä Board. “The plan lays out the practical measures we’re taking to deliver on our climate commitment and shows that we are serious about supporting our customers and partners in their own climate targets.”
