Environmental management

Resource efficiency and investments in best available technology support the sustainable use of energy, water and raw materials. They also help to further reduce emissions from our production processes.

Our operations are guided by the principles of our environmental policy, which considers sustainable forest management, environmental responsibility, the continuous improvement of our operations, resource efficiency and our suppliers’ sustainability.

We actively work to minimise and manage our environmental impact and strive to prevent potential risks from materialising.

  • All our mills comply with the limits of mill-specific environmental permits set by environmental authorities. These permits cover factors such as discharges into water, emissions into air, noise and requirements for the monitoring of, and reporting on, emissions.

  • All our production units follow certified management systems in terms of quality, the environment and energy. In accordance with these management systems, our production units conduct regular risk assessments and internal audits. They are also regularly audited by third parties.

  • We measure and develop our performance with the help of ambitious sustainability targets, which exceed the requirements of legislation.

Management systems support continuous improvement

All Metsä Board production units have a certified ISO 9001 quality management system and ISO 14001 environmental management system as well as PEFC and FSC® chain of custody systems.

All our production units have also implemented a certified energy efficiency system (EES), which serves as a systematic management tool to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. They are also certified according to the ISO 50001 energy management system.

Achieving our targets requires investments

At the operational level, Metsä Board's production units continuously make small-scale investments that focus on more efficient use of raw materials, water and energy, emissions reduction and risk prevention.

In addition, we are making significant investments to achieve our ambitious sustainability targets for 2030. The most significant of these are the renewal of our Husum pulp mill and the development programme at our Kemi paperboard mill.

All our production units follow certified management systems.
