Sustainability in practice

Forerunner in sustainable bioeconomy

Values guide Metsä Group's operations

Sustainable bioeconomy enables circular economy

The main raw material for Metsä Group's products is renewable wood and our products replace the use of fossil raw materials. We supply wood from northern forests, where we ensure their sustainable management, growth and nature values. We use raw materials, water and energy efficiently, and we produce renewable energy from side streams. This is sustainable and resource efficient bioeconomy, where Metsä Group is a forerunner.

Sustainability themes

Everything we do involves sustainability – from the products all the way to the forest. All of our products are safe and recyclable. Our main raw material is renewable wood from sustainably managed northern forests. We always use the best available technology in our production, ensure the safety and well-being of our employees and create well-being, locally and internationally.

Our sustainability work is divided into four themes that cover all of our operations. Read more about our themes, targets and achievements on these pages and in our Sustainability Report 2020.

The four themes of our sustainability work are:

  • We bring the forest to you – Raw materials and supply chain
  • We offer sustainable choices –  Products and services
  • We work for a better climate and the environment – Resource efficiency and environmental impacts
  • We create well-being – Stakeholders and social impacts

Products and services

Renewable products

We offer sustainable choices – renewable products from a recyclable raw material

We manufacture tissue and cooking papers, fresh forest fibre paperboards, pulp and wood products. Our recyclable products are an excellent alternative to products made from non-renewable natural resources. We invest in research and develop new, wood-based bioproducts.

We offer wood supply and sustainable forest management services and solutions for our customers' needs.

Raw materials and supply chain

Metsä Group brings the forest to you

We bring the forest to you – wood from sustainably managed northern forests

The wood we use comes from densely forested areas in northern Europe and Russia, where forest growth outpaces use. We always know the origin of the wood we use.

Third-party forest certification signifies legal and sustainable forest use for us and our customers.
Enhancing sustainability throughout the entire value chain is important to us. We collaborate closely with suppliers of goods and services and our customers. Our network of more than 1,000 suppliers allows for efficient, reliable logistics.

Resource efficiency and environmental impacts

We work for a better climate and environment

We work for a better
climate and the environment –
more from northern wood

We use raw materials, energy and water as efficiently as possible. We make highly efficient use of different parts of the tree: we deliver logs to sawmills, make pulp from pulpwood for further processing, and produce renewable energy from branches, treetops and bark.

Metsä Group has 36 production facilities in eight countries in Europe. Of the energy we use in production, 80% is renewable. We seek to maximise our use of renewable energy and have significantly reduced our emissions into the air and water. Our pulp mills are major producers of energy, and they sell energy in the form of heat to local district heating networks and electricity to the grid.

Stakeholders and social impacts

We create well-being

We create well-being –
locally and internationally

Metsä Group employs 9,300 people and creates thousands of jobs indirectly in logging and transport companies and the retail business, among other sectors. Millions of people use our products every day.

Metsä Group is an international company with strong roots in Finland. We require our employees and suppliers to comply with the highest ethical standards. We invest in safety at work and promote responsible management. We want to be a fair and open neighbour in our local communities.

In 2018, we conducted a human rights impact assessment process to deepen our understanding of the actual and potential human rights impacts resulting from our operations. Based on the results, we have continued to develop our operations and processes further to prevent more efficiently any adverse impacts on human rights resulting from our operations.

Sustainability management and targets

Target oriented management

Everything we do involves sustainability. Our sustainability targets, principles and Code of Conduct support responsible leadership at Metsä Group. The Sustainability Principles and eight concrete targets guide Metsä Group’s operations and support leadership.

We have determined ways of working and prepared instructions for environmental management, personnel policies, equality and purchasing. Our Supplier Code of Conduct serves to ensure ethically sound operations even in earlier stages of the supply chain, and audits serve to further develop ways of working.

Metsä Group is committed to the UN Global Compact corporate responsibility initiative and its principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. We also acknowledge the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and work to develop our operations in close link to them.
