Finland’s tallest wooden building
Metsä Portti is in the Finland’s tallest wooden building, that has 14 floors and reaches a height of approximately 57 metres.
The building is also among the tallest wooden office buildings in Europe. Its design combines wood, concrete and steel to achieve high technical performance, efficient construction and long-term durability.
The building is owned and developed by Varma. Architectural design was carried out by ARCO Architecture Company and the main contractor is Jatke Toimitilat Oy.
Hybrid construction combines wood, concrete and steel
The new Metsä headquarters is an example of hybrid construction.
Hybrid construction does not position wood, concrete and steel as competing materials. Instead, each material is used where its properties provide the greatest benefit in terms of structural performance, construction efficiency and overall project costs.
The building’s load-bearing structure is based on a column-and-beam frame, reinforced by stairwells and elevator shafts. The intermediate floors use timber-concrete composite structures. A significant portion of the frame, façades and roof structures were prefabricated as elements, helping to improve construction efficiency on site.
