Climate & Environment

The environmental sustainability is essential for Metsä Tissue and the entire Metsä Group, and the company’s operations are developed to continuously improve its environmental performance. The most significant environmental impacts of our tissue paper production are related to the use of energy and water, as well as the de-inking sludge generated in the recycled fibre purification and de-inking process.

To minimise our environmental impacts we have set ambitious targets for 2030 regarding water usage, energy efficiency, fossil emissions, and waste management. Not only have we set these targets but Metsä Tissue also uses certified management systems to make sure we are constantly improving our environmental performance in our operations and complying with the systems’ requirements.

All Metsä Tissue mills have quality, environmental and energy efficiency systems certified in accordance with the criteria of the ISO 9000, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 standards. Most of the mills also have the occupational health and safety management system certificate OHSAS 18001 or ISO 45001. Management systems for the chain of custody of fibre raw material, certified according to the requirements of the PEFC and FSC forest certification standards, are used at all mills to ensure the traceability of wood-based raw material.

Metsä Tissue’s key sustainability figures are reported as part of Metsä Group’s sustainability reporting.
