Metsä Fibre’s EUDR compliance

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) aims to ensure that products consumed in the EU do not cause deforestation or degradation of forests worldwide.

Recent updates:

  • The European Commission published simplification review of EU Deforestation Regulation on 4.5.2026. According to this review, the practical application of the EUDR means that:
    • As a downstream operator Metsä Fibre has no obligation to provide reference numbers to customers.
    • For Metsä Fibre’s products, the company’s customers are also considered downstream operators, which means they do not need to receive or collect reference numbers.
    • If a Metsä Fibre customer imports products into the EU that contain Metsä Fibre pulp or sawn timber, the customer may use the EU’s general reference number for these raw materials, as they have already been placed on the EU market. If you use raw materials that have not previously been placed on the EU market, please remember to check the EUDR requirements for these materials separately with the suppliers of the raw materials in question.
  • The start of the application of the Deforestation Regulation has been postponed until the end of 2026.

At Metsä Fibre, we are committed to supporting your business and ensuring a smooth transition to the new requirements. We are continuing our EUDR preparations with an updated schedule to make sure our operations will comply with the final regulation within the new timeline.

Metsä Group is actively monitoring all updates to the EUDR and participating in ongoing discussions and development work related to the regulation. The necessary adjustments to Metsä Group’s systems will be carried out following the publication of the final regulation. We will keep you updated, and the latest information is always available on this web page.
