Reliable customer deliveries are the cornerstone of Metsä Fibre's operations. They do not happen by chance; they are the result of robust production capacity, a global warehouse network, flexible logistics, and intelligent planning.

Supply chain resilience is a strategic strength that we develop with determination, ensuring on-time deliveries and uninterrupted customer operations in all situations.

For our customers, a reliable supply chain means smooth daily operations. Products arrive as agreed — on time and in good condition. Our decentralized warehouse network and flexible logistics enable fast deliveries worldwide, so production never halts due to unexpected delays.

“When our customers can trust us, their own production keeps running without interruptions. That’s ultimately the most important measure of success for us,” says Anu Metsäranta, VP Supply Chain at Metsä Fibre.

Strong foundation: modern mills and broad production capacity

Security of supply starts with access to high-quality wood raw material and the efficient production capacity of our modern mills. These are the backbone of Metsä Fibre’s supply chain, ensuring consistent production.

“Stable wood raw material supply and efficient production give us a competitive edge and provide our customers with peace of mind. When the capacity and quality are assured, we can focus on logistics optimisation and customer service,” Metsäranta continues.

From our mills, the products are shipped to service warehouses that Metsä Fibre maintains on several continents. Decentralised storage enables flexible deliveries and quick response to customer needs.

Service warehouses at key transport hubs

Metsä Fibre has several warehouses in Europe, North America and Asia. This global network enables fast deliveries to all corners of the world and provides certainty even in exceptional situations.

"Timely customer deliveries require excellent management and constant anticipation throughout the logistics chain. With alternative routings available, we can respond quickly when needed. This resilience ensures our supply chain withstands disruptions and customers receive their products as agreed,” Metsäranta explains.

Flexibility means Metsä Fibre can direct shipments to different ports as needed. The mode of transport is chosen based on the customer and destination country, making both schedules and environmental impact more efficient.

Responsibility at the heart of the supply chain

Responsibility is central to Metsä Fibre’s supply chain. We reduce logistics emissions in cooperation with key partners by optimizing routes, improving load rates, and favoring rail connections whenever possible.

All suppliers must commit to Metsä Group’s Supplier Code of Conduct, which includes requirements for environmental protection, human rights, and responsible business practices. In 2024, 99.5% of our procurements were from suppliers adhering to these principles.

“Responsibility isn’t a separate goal for us — it’s how we operate every day,” Metsäranta sums up.

Reliable logistics partners and route optimisation

The strength of our supply chain lies in its flexibility. Metsä Fibre works with transport companies over the long term and uses both container and bulk transport. When relevant, pulp, sawn timber, and other Metsä Group products can be shipped together, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

“We’re not dependent on a single port or route. With alternatives, we can react quickly and keep deliveries on schedule,” Metsäranta says.

One concrete example of our agility was seen in spring 2024 after the collapse of the Baltimore Bridge. Metsä Fibre’s logistics team introduced new transport routes in less than 48 hours, minimizing the impact on customer deliveries.

Cooperation ensures security of supply

Supply chain management is especially critical when products travel long distances and customers expect precisely timed deliveries. Metsä Fibre uses integrated planning that combines sales, production, procurement, warehousing, and logistics into a seamless whole.

“Reliability of supply isn’t just about planning. It requires constant cooperation, responsiveness, and the use of technology,” says Metsäranta.

Metsäranta also emphasizes the importance of partnerships: “Long-term relationships with logistics partners make large-scale operations possible.”
