Metsä Fibre unveiled its innovative 3D materials for the first time at World Bio Markets, held on 10–11 June 2025 in The Hague. The event brought together over 400 global leaders from the industrial biomanufacturing sector for two days of pre-arranged 1-to-1 meetings, knowledge exchange, and networking – all aimed at accelerating the transition to a fossil-free economy.
The newly introduced 3D material is a further development of Metsä Fibre’s light fibre material. “The material can be made into almost any shape with astonishing shape fidelity. It also has tunable flexibility and hardness”, explains Nina Forsman, Development Manager, Metsä Fibre. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, construction, packaging, furniture, and footwear.
According to Tuomo Niemi, Director of Business Development, New Products at Metsä Fibre, the event provided an excellent platform for collaboration and insight:
“It was a pleasure to present Metsä Fibre's new innovations that can replace fossil-based materials. This was the second time Metsä Fibre participated in World Bio Markets, and it is a great way to meet other companies, bio-developers, and producers. Together we can drive the commercialisation and growth of the bioeconomy. During the two-day event, we met many companies interested in utilising Metsä Fibre’s new products in their value chains. The meetings also brought us valuable insights into value chains and particularly what they are looking for in different biomaterials.”
The launch generated strong interest among attendees. “3D materials were introduced for the first time. Many companies showed interest towards this kind of material. The held discussions gave valuable feedback on how to further develop the material and also ideas for new potential applications,” Niemi adds.
World Bio Markets plays a key role in facilitating commercial connections and generating deal flow between bio-developers and producers, global brands and buyers, community enablers, investors, financiers, and suppliers. Metsä Fibre’s participation highlights its commitment to advancing sustainable, pulp-based alternatives that can compete with and replace fossil-based solutions.
