Kerto LVL is a great material due to its predictability and calculability

The beautiful Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie, Speyside in Scotland was designed and produced by an Austrian company Wiehag, GmbH. Johannes Rebhahn, DI and Head of International Timber Projects, explains how the undulating roof was constructed:

“The Macallan Distillery is not actually curved, it’s faceted. There is a kink every three meters, and that made the geometry challenging,” he says. The structure was successfully crafted, however, by using Kerto® LVL (laminated veneer lumber).

Kerto LVL is visible in the distillery and visitor centre’s ceiling: the roof is a combination of glulam and Kerto LVL. The rigid elements will not curve or bend over time.

Kerto LVL is a fast, light and green material. Rebhahn says that engineers appreciate Kerto LVL’s technical properties that make Kerto LVL a trustworthy construction material.

“The major advantage of building with wood is the ratio between strength and weight. Wood is also fire resistant: we do know it burns, but it burns in a way that we as engineers can calculate,” Rebhahn says.
