Calculating the environmental impact of the wood products

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised and reliable way of publishing life cycle assessment information. Third-party verified EPDs provide information about the environmental impact of wood products throughout their life cycle.

EPDs in accordance to EN 15804 +A2(2019)

Updated EPDs for Kerto® LVL, Metsä Wood Spruce, Metsä Wood Birch and Finnjoist are created according to EN 15804 +A2(2019).

The life cycle assessment covers the product phase (A1-A3) and construction process phase (A4-A5) as well as the end-of-life (C1-C4) and the reuse, recycling, and recovery potential (D). Engineered wood structures are designed to last for the whole lifetime of the building. There are no environmental impacts caused during the use phase (B).

The data includes raw materials, energy consumption, water consumption, packaging, products, by-products, wastes, and all the related transportation.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products.

The concept of EPDs is based on the standard ISO 14025 and it considers the full Life Cycle Assessment of goods and services.
