New carbon values for Kerto LVL have been published

Metsä Wood has updated and improved Kerto® LVL’s environmental product declaration, giving it one of the lowest carbon footprints among LVL producers. The new Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), published on Environdec, provides up to date and reliable data to support customers in their climate impact calculations, environmental certifications, and sustainable design decisions.

The carbon footprint of Kerto LVL (GWP-fossil, A1–A3) has decreased from 280 to 119 kg CO₂-eq/m³, representing a reduction of approximately 57.5%. The improvement is the result of systematic efforts to enhance Metsä Wood's own operations as well as continuous development work together with the company's subcontractors and raw material suppliers.

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised, third-party verified document that provides transparent and comparable information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. EPDs for construction products are prepared in accordance with the European standard EN 15804 and the international standard ISO 14025. They enable architects, engineers, and construction professionals to make informed material choices by providing reliable data on greenhouse gas emissions, resource use, and other environmental indicators. As environmental regulations in the construction sector tighten across Europe, EPDs are becoming an increasingly critical tool for demonstrating compliance and supporting sustainable design decisions.

More accurate data for improved emission values

The new EPD is based on more accurate and reliable data than before. The calculations have been improved by refining input data in close cooperation with suppliers, switching to fossil-free electricity at all Metsä Wood mills, and strengthening the strategic importance of EPDs. A broad expert team covering sustainability, supply chain, production, and compliance contributed to achieving these results.

"The updated EPD is a result of determined cross-functional teamwork across the entire value chain. By working closely with our suppliers to create more accurate datasets and by investing in fossil-free energy at our mills, we have been able to demonstrate a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of Kerto LVL. This provides our customers with reliable, up-to-date data to support their climate impact calculations, environmental certifications, and sustainable design decisions," says Rosa Zabihian, Sustainability Manager at Metsä Wood.
