How Metsä Group takes nature sites into account

Metsä Group is one of the largest forest industry operators in Finland. We therefore consider it especially important that our operations are based on sustainable forest management and use.

High-quality advance planning and good cooperation among the authorities, the felling right holder, the forest owner and the harvesting company ensure nature sites are taken into account in forest management. On this page, we explain in more detail how we take nature sites into account in our work in Finnish forests.

What happens if mistakes are noticed?

Metsä Group conducts around 30,000 wood sales every year, and we aim for flawless harvesting operations. Every year in its operations, Metsä Group observes individual mistakes related to nature sites. Mistakes may be caused by inadequate map entries or human errors, for example. They are pointed out by machine operators or detected in inspections carried out by the company or the authorities.

We always report errors to the authorities at our own initiative. Any environmental deviation leads to a detailed analysis of the incident and the adoption of corrective measures on the site and in our operating methods.

If a suspected breach of law related to the management of nature sites or a deviation from the forest certification guidelines is detected during harvesting, this is openly reported on the company’s website.

Metsä Group is also introducing a compensation model for cases in which a nature site protected by law is damaged during operations.
