Means of voluntary forest protection

Many forest owners want to protect their forests with biodiversity value on their own initiative. Protection can be for a fixed term or permanent. On this page, we tell you about ways to voluntarily protect your forest.

Environmental support is financial compensation granted to a forest owner by the Finnish Forest Centre for protecting, for example, sites specified in the Forest Act site for a fixed period of ten years. If you are an owner-member of Metsä Group, you can get assistance from our local forest specialist for submitting an environmental support application.

METSO, or the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland, is a voluntary programme aimed at safeguarding forest biodiversity. The programme supports forest owners in the protection and management of valuable forest areas. Forest owners can offer their forests for protection, either for a fixed term or permanently, and they are compensated for this. Our local forestry specialist can help you assess whether it would be worthwhile to offer your site for the METSO programme.

The Metsä Group Conservation Foundation’s operations will begin in 2026. The Conservation Foundation complements the forest owners’ options for strengthening the biodiversity of their forests. The foundation focuses on the permanent protection of forests with high biodiversity value. Conservation measures can be adopted across Finland, and they are not limited to the forests of Metsä Group’s owner-members.
