More than 100,000 wood sale transactions take place in Finland every year, and as many parties collect price data, the market price of wood is known relatively accurately at every moment. Price statistics are also widely published. Among the most reliable statistics are those compiled by Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), and Metsä Group uses them on its website, for example.
The statistics of Natural Resources Institute Finland are averages. For example, in the second week of January 2026, the average price of a spruce log on a regeneration felling site in Southern Finland was EUR 78.98 per cubic metre. Juho Rantala, Metsä Group's SVP, Wood Trade and Forest Services, says that the price may vary by several euros in both directions.
“Good information about the general situation of the wood market is published weekly. However, we should bear in mind that the average price is not the whole truth: there is considerable variation in prices, caused by factors specific to each felling site.”
These factors include the tree species, diameter and other quality characteristics of the trees, the felling site location (the object of the wood sale), the volume of wood to be harvested, the transport distance, the bearing capacity of the forest road, and the market situation of the products manufactured from wood.
