Workplace safety and wellbeing

Safety is in our DNA. The health and safety of our employees, suppliers, and partners always come first, and we take systematic actions to promote occupational safety and welfare. A strong safety culture is actively encouraged at all of our nine mills.

Accident-free working environment

At Metsä Tissue, we have various activities and elements which are developing our safety culture, namely in three areas: employees and technical safety development, as well as improving safety management systems.

Metsä Tissue is continuing to standardise safety processes and implement Metsä Group’s safety standards. Metsä Tissue uses a Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality management (HSEQ) software tool, which is a common tool for all Metsä Group’s business areas.

One key method through which Metsä Tissue measures its safety performance is by determining its employees' total recordable incident frequency (TRIF). Our target is that by 2030, our employees' TRIF will be zero.

To read more about our safety metrics, please see the Metsä Group´s Annual review.

Safety of subcontractors

We engage in long-term work to improve safety at work, and we require occupational safety skills from our suppliers and partners. We provide induction trainings on safe ways of working to all our employees and partners working at our mills.

Before starting to work at our site, contractors are required to assess the risks associated with their specific tasks and to prepare a corresponding safety plan. These plans must be submitted to the relevant mill before the work starts. Our suppliers also undergo a general safety induction and a job-specific safety induction. In positions where higher risks may exist, they must secure the necessary work permits.

Completing the general safety induction is mandatory for all Metsä Tissue employees and all contractors working at our mills. The drivers of heavy vehicles must complete their own separate training. During annual maintenance shutdowns, everyone arriving at a Metsä Tissue mill for maintenance work must complete an annual maintenance induction.

A valid occupational safety card is mandatory when working at the Metsä Tissue mills in Finland. Another mandatory safety card that is used in Finland is called Valtticard. Valtticard is an electronic ID that complies with the Occupational Safety and Health Act and serves also as an access pass to the building site.
