Lignin-based functional chemicals

STARTING DATE: 12/2025

Lignin is a natural biopolymer which can be found in the cell walls of plants.

In pulp production, lignin is separated from wood into black liquor in the chemical cycle and used as bioenergy. Lignin could also be used as value-adding ingredient in chemical and material applications to replace fossil based components.

In this project we are commercializing Metsä LigO™, a new lignin product family which will be processed from the side streams of pulp production. Potential end-uses for it includes for example concrete plasticizers, other dispersants and functional materials.
