Metsä Spring has appointed Antti Valtonen as Vice President of its Muoto project. The appointment further strengthens Muoto’s commercial capabilities as the project potentially moves from development to market entry. The decision follows a year of significant milestones, including new product launches and strategic partnerships.
Metsä Group’s innovation company, Metsä Spring, has appointed Antti Valtonen as Vice President and project lead of the Muoto project. Valtonen starts in his new role in early January 2026 and will be responsible for Muoto's commercial development, as the project aims to accelerate its transition from demonstration to scalable market growth.
Antti Valtonen joins Metsä Spring from Sulapac, where he last served as the CEO and led the company through a significant commercial transformation toward international expansion. Sulapac has successfully commercialised its bio-based materials and partnered with global brands such as Schwan Cosmetics, Chanel, L’Oréal, and Burger King.
Prior to Sulapac, Antti Valtonen spent more than a decade at F-Secure, working in leadership roles across global marketing, communications, and product marketing, serving international customers and partners. He also brings experience from TeliaSonera and the telecom industry, where he worked for five years. His background spans startups, scale-ups, and larger organisations, combining strategic commercial thinking with hands-on operational execution.
“Antti brings a rare combination of entrepreneurial mindset and corporate discipline. As Muoto aims to move into its next phase, his experience in scaling international business and building strong commercial organisations will be a major asset,” says Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring.
Over the past 12 months, Muoto has achieved several important milestones. The project has expanded its product portfolio, received international recognition, and entered into a strategic collaboration with Amcor to develop next-generation wood-based food packaging solutions.
“I am super excited about the opportunity to join an innovative project built by exceptional professionals. Considering my background, I feel that this is the perfect time to join, as it combines the best of both worlds, corporate and start-up. The product development has been done thoroughly, and now it is time to accelerate the commercialisation and build the readiness to serve high-volume customers,” says Antti Valtonen, VP of the Muoto project at Metsä Spring.
Valtonen sees strong market potential for Muoto, as customers look for reliable, fibre-based packaging solutions.
“Many companies are reviewing their packaging portfolios and looking for alternatives that meet both functional and operational requirements. Muoto is well-positioned for high-volume products: it looks good, performs well, and meets the needs of demanding food applications. I believe strongly in the product and in the value it brings to customers,” Valtonen adds.
The appointment follows the departure of Jarkko Tuominen, who has left Metsä Spring and joined Paptic.
