Innovating for the future at our Simpele mill

In April 2024, Metsä Board announced a €60 million investment to modernise the Simpele board machine as part of its commitment to delivering premium product quality and achieving fossil free operations across all mills by 2030. The investment has now been completed, and the upgraded board machine is up and running.

This comprehensive renewal brings significant benefits to our customers:

  • Improved product quality and visual uniformity: A brand-new coating section with an enhanced layout
  • Carbon footprint reduction: New technology enables the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy
  • Better availability: Production capacity has increased by 10,000 tonnes, bringing total annual output to 310,000 tonnes

The successful start-up marks an important milestone in our journey toward more sustainable and efficient operations — and lays a strong foundation for future growth.

Metsä Board's 2030 climate change mitigation plan includes investments and development measures to replace fossil-based energy

Climate change mitigation plan

Our 2030 climate change mitigation plan for production units and associated power plants includes investments and development measures to replace fossil-based energy sources with renewable fuels or process electrification. The plan also includes a complete shift to fossil-free alternatives for all purchased heat and electricity.

The share of fossil-free energy related to MetsäBoard Classic FBB includes the production of mechanical pulp and paperboard at the Simpele mill site, covering both direct and purchased energy. In 2024, the share of fossil-free energy at our Simpele mill was 89%. With the elimination of peat usage and the transition to drying the coating with fossil-free electricity following a modernisation investment, the share of fossil-free energy is estimated to rise to 98% in 2025.

The only fossil fuels remaining at the Simpele mill will be backup fuels used for the power plant, which are also set to be phased out by the end of 2029. Additionally, all other pulp used to produce MetsäBoard Classic FBB at other Metsä Group mills will entirely be made with fossil-free energy by the end of 2029.
