Efficient use of side streams

We strive to utilise all production side streams as efficiently as possible, and our goal is that by 2030 we will make use of all the side streams rather than generating any landfill waste. In the production of hygiene tissue papers, the largest side stream is the de-inking sludge from the cleaning of recycled paper. Currently, de-inking sludge is used both as a raw material and for generating energy. It is used as fibre clay for various purposes, such as raw material for the construction industry and material for the construction of landfill sites and road building.

Sustainability cases

Due to utilizing pulper reject from de-inking for heat generation and increasing fresh fibre use, our Krapkowice mill has reduced its landfill waste almost 70% (2021 vs 2020).

In cooperation with cement factories, our Kreuzau mill has started trials to utilise ash from the mill’s heat generation. This is in line with our objective to contribute to circular economy.
