Metsä Group consists of Metsäliitto Cooperative, its two businesses Metsä Wood and Metsä Forest and Cooperative's subsidiaries and associated companies Metsä Tissue, Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre.
Metsäliitto Cooperative is Metsä Group’s parent company. Metsäliitto Cooperative has some 125,000 forest owner members. The total forest area owned the members amounts to about one-half of all Finnish privately-owned forests. Any private person or organisation owning at least three hectares of forest in Finland can become a member of Metsäliitto Cooperative.
Metsäliitto Cooperative's mission is to competitively procure, market and upgrade Finnish wood at its own production units so as to enhance the value of its owner members' assets. In addition, Cooperative offers its members extensive forest management services, assistance and guidance in timber sales, as well as investment opportunities, such as various additional shares. Metsäliitto Cooperative pays interest on members’ capital and additional members’ capital, which constitutes a distribution of profit by the cooperative to its members.
Its unique ownership base and business structure give Metsä Group a competitive advantage and also reinforce the long-term nature of its operations. Through Cooperative's ownermembers, Metsä Group has at its disposal considerable reserves of premium quality wood raw material, providing it with a stable and long-term basis for developing its own operations and production units.
