Perttu Sorsa, Project Coordinator, Sales

”A trainee programme is a definite draw in the labour market.”

My goal has been to go for the jobs that are more challenging and a little bit different. My own level of activity and having the right skills has helped me in this, but a little luck is always needed.

My career started through a trainee programme in 2010. Metsä Group was an interesting Finnish group and I was familiar with the company Metsä Board. My current job description was formulated during the year-long programme. Paperboard business had some upcoming, interesting sales-related projects that needed a coordinator.

What I like about my job is that it is relevant and diverse offering opportunities for personal development.

We include training in my personal development programme with my supervisor. For example, last autumn I completed training programme on negotiating skills. Now I’m continuing my German language studies. I stay current in the business by reading sales reports and trade publications. I want to learn more about the actual sales work. I believe the best way to learn is to grab a briefcase and go visit customers. Perhaps in a couple of years I’ll be working as a technical sales rep.

Nice co-workers and a good supervisor are important in the everyday work. I get to learn new things and all the practicalities are in order in my unit. I compete in orienteering at the national level, and I commute to work by bicycle year round.
